How to Get Someone's Ring Size Without Asking Them

You found the perfect engraved ring. You know exactly what you want on the band. The only thing standing between you and checkout is one number: their ring size. Guess it wrong on a mass-produced ring and a jeweler can usually fix it. Guess it wrong on an engraved ring and you may be stuck, because the engraving is cut or lasered to fit that exact band, and resizing it afterward can warp or remove the words you paid for.

This matters more right now than most of the year. Engagement season runs from Thanksgiving through Valentine's Day, and Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Eve are consistently named among the most popular days to propose in North America, according to WeddingWire's roundup of the most popular engagement dates. Promise rings, anniversary bands, and "just because" engraved rings follow the same calendar. If you're shopping for any of them, here is how to get the size right before you order, and what to do if you're still not sure.

How do I find out someone's ring size without asking them?

Borrow a ring they already wear on the same finger and have it measured, or trace it yourself. This is the most reliable method because it uses their actual hand instead of a guess.

A few ways to do it:

  • Borrow and measure. Take a ring they wear on the target finger to a jeweler, who can tell you the size in a minute, usually free. No jeweler nearby? Draw the inside of the ring on paper, or press it gently into a bar of soap or a ball of clay, then compare the circle to a printable ring size chart.
  • Use a ring sizer at home. If you can get the ring alone for ten minutes, a plastic ring sizer (the kind jewelers use) or a printable paper sizer will get you within a size or two.
  • Ask someone close to them. A sibling, parent, or close friend may already know, especially if your person has had rings resized before.
  • Measure while they're asleep. Slip a strip of string or a thin piece of paper around the base of their finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length against a ring size chart. It's a rough estimate, but combined with a second method it gets you closer.
  • Use a cover story. "I'm picking out a ring for my sister/mom and need a stand-in finger" has worked for a lot of people. Bring them along to "help," then measure the one that matters.

One detail people miss: the hand matters. A ring worn on the right hand can fit differently than the same finger on the left, and dominant hands are sometimes very slightly larger. Match the hand and finger you're actually buying for, not just the closest one you can get your hands on.

Can an engraved ring be resized after it's made?

Usually not, or not without redoing the engraving. Once a word, date, or initial is cut into a specific spot on the band, stretching or cutting the metal to change the size distorts or removes part of what's engraved.

This is also why our Engraved Men's Ring and Engraved Women's Ring are made to order in a specific size you choose at checkout, rather than shipped as a one-size-fits-most band. Each one is listed as final sale once it's made, because it's been personalized to your exact words. If a piece arrives damaged or isn't what you ordered, we'll remake or replace it. What we can't undo is a size that was ordered correctly but doesn't fit the finger, since the ring was made exactly as requested. That's the whole reason to spend ten extra minutes getting the number right before you check out, not after.

What if I'm still not sure about the number?

If you have two possible sizes in mind, the safer guess depends on the ring. A slightly loose ring can be worn on a chain, moved to a different finger, or worn with a cheap plastic ring guard until you can confirm the size and reorder. A ring that's too tight to get on isn't wearable at all, even temporarily.

So if you truly have to guess between two sizes, lean toward the larger one. It at least lets your person wear the ring that day, even if it's not perfect, while a too-small ring usually goes straight into a drawer until it's exchanged.

What's the best way to measure a ring size at home?

Use a string or a thin strip of paper, wrap it around the base of the finger, mark where the end meets, and measure the length in millimeters. Compare that number to a standard ring size conversion chart, which is easy to find with a search and free to use.

A few tips that make the measurement more accurate:

  • Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are slightly more swollen than first thing in the morning, which is closer to how the ring will fit most of the time.
  • Measure in normal room temperature. Cold fingers shrink slightly and can throw off the number.
  • If you can, measure two or three times and use the most common result rather than a single reading.
  • Knuckle size matters if the ring has to pass over it. If their knuckle is noticeably bigger than the base of the finger, size for the knuckle, not the base.

Do ring sizes work the same everywhere?

No. Ring sizing is not a single global standard, so a size that fits in one country can be printed as a different number or letter somewhere else. Canada and the US both use the same numeric scale, which is what our engraved rings are sized in, but the UK, Ireland, and Australia use a letter scale (like L or M), and most of Europe uses a circumference measurement in millimeters.

Since HussainTraders ships free worldwide, this comes up a lot for buyers outside Canada and the US. If you already know a size in letters or millimeters, run it through a ring size conversion chart before you order, rather than guessing which number is closest. A size L in the UK scale, for example, lands close to a US size 6, but it's worth double-checking the exact chart rather than rounding from memory, since the scales don't always line up neatly at every size.

If you measured at home with string or paper, you'll get a circumference or diameter in millimeters first anyway, so converting to the US and Canada sizes we use is just one extra lookup, not an extra measurement.

Should I just ask instead of guessing?

Yes, for anything that isn't a surprise proposal. Asking removes the guesswork entirely and takes thirty seconds. Save the secret-agent sizing methods for the one occasion that actually calls for secrecy.

For a promise ring, an anniversary gift, a matching set, or a self-gift, there's no reason to make it harder than it needs to be. Our Engraved Heart Signet Ring is a popular choice for exactly this kind of gift, and it's easy to size correctly when you can just ask. If you and your partner are shopping for a matching pair, our Love is Love collection has engraved pieces sized for both of you. The only time secrecy is worth the sizing risk is the actual proposal, and even then, a borrowed ring or a soap impression beats a cold guess.

If the ring you're ordering comes with a message card already written for the moment, like our Engraved Ring for Wife with Message Card, getting the size right the first time means the whole gift lands exactly as planned, card and all, instead of getting delayed by a resize.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes does HussainTraders offer for engraved rings?
The Engraved Men's Ring comes in sizes 8, 9, and 10. The Engraved Women's Ring and the Engraved Ring for Wife with Message Card come in sizes 6 through 10. The Engraved Heart Signet Ring runs in sizes 6, 7, and 8.

Can I exchange an engraved ring if I ordered the wrong size?
Because each ring is made to order with your chosen engraving, it's final sale once it ships. If it arrives damaged or different from what you ordered, we'll remake or replace it. For a sizing mistake on your end, you'd need to place a new order in the correct size, which is exactly why getting the measurement right up front matters so much with engraved pieces.

Is it rude to ask someone their ring size directly?
No. Outside of an actual proposal, asking is the normal, expected way to buy jewelry for someone. It's faster and more accurate than any workaround.

How long does an engraved ring take to arrive once I order the right size?
Our engraved rings are made to order and ship within 3 to 5 business days, then travel with free standard shipping, which is worldwide on orders from HussainTraders.

Does a tight ring stretch over time with daily wear?
Not meaningfully, and you shouldn't count on it to. Stainless steel and gold-finished steel bands, which is what our engraved rings are made from, don't stretch the way a cheap costume ring might. Order the size that fits now.
